17. Functional Communication in Waterfowl Birds

Laura is a student of Linguistics & Communication research at the University of Amsterdam. During her internship with Leonie Cornips, she studied the adaptation of pragmatics theories of linguistics onto the communication of waterfowl birds. Laura did ethnographic fieldwork at different parks in Amsterdam to observe how the birds interact with each other in a social context. Then, following previous theoretical work on the intentionality of animals, she used Conversation Analysis to apply the pragmatics theory of ‘Speech Act Theory’ onto the bird interactions.
