Markus Balkenhol is sociaal antropoloog en werkt aan de thema’s kolonialisme, ras, burgerschap, cultureel erfgoed, en religie. Hij is als onderzoeker verbonden aan het Meertens Instituut. Zijn proefschrift “Tracing Slavery. An Ethnography of Diaspora, Affect, and Cultural Heritage in Amsterdam” (2014, cum laude) behandelt de verschillende vormen van culturele herinneringen aan slavernij in Amsterdam Zuidoost.
